Code of Conduct
Guidelines and Rules of Conduct
- All classes start as per the schedule shown in the time table.
- The students are expected to behave in an exemplary manner within the college and outside.
- Everyday, classes begin with a prayer. As soon as the prayer bell rings, students should stand still and observe perfect silence till the prayer and announcements are over.
- Students are expected to stand up from their seats when the teacher enters the classroom and remain so till allowed to sit down by the teacher.
- No student shall enter or leave the classroom when the session is on, without the permission of the teacher concerned.
- Howling or shouting is not allowed within the college campus and in college buses.
- Students should not disfigure the walls, doors, windows, desks, tables, chairs and other items with graffiti, engraving, etc.
- All grievances are to be presented to the Principal through the class representatives.
- Unauthorized crowding or assembly or procession inside the campus is strictly prohibited.
- Any student who is persistently insubordinate, repeatedly or willfully mischievous, guilty of fraud or malpractice in exams shall be removed from the rolls.
- Students are expected to dress modestly, plainly and neatly and to be punctual, disciplined, hardworking and self-confident.
- Bikes and other vehicles are to be parked only in allotted locations.
- Fees and other payments have to be paid within the prescribed date.
- All students are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular and other personality development activities as scheduled by the committees.
- Students should try to find solutions to problems by consensus.
- As part of our civic responsibility, we should conserve electricity, water and other valuable resources.
- Classrooms and laboratories must be kept neat and orderly.
- Furniture, appliances and other equipment of the college must be handled carefully.
- Students are not allowed to loiter around the campus and disturb work.
- Students are not allowed to circulate notices, petitions or pamphlets of any kind or paste them on the notice board, walls or anywhere in the campus without the written permission of the Principal.
- Strikes and similar demonstrations are not permitted in the campus.
- Prior permission from the Principal is essential to take part in intercollegiate competitions, live/photographic modelling, Radio / TV programmes, etc.
- No student shall individually or as a group produce, direct act or give technical assistance to any film or project inside or outside the campus without the prior written permission of the Principal.
- No student shall take up or assist any outside project, paid or unpaid, without the written permission of the Principal.
- Use of mobile phones, obscene cinematic dances and fashion shows in the campus are banned via G.O. - No RT/No 346/05 Higher Edn dtd 1.03. 2005.
- Taking photographs of fellow students or members of the staff within the campus using any photographic equipment is strictly prohibited except for academic purposes approved by the college authorities.
- SJCC requires from the students conformity to certain regulations, to benefit the entire college as well as the individual students. In accepting the offer of admission to SJCC, each student accepts the responsibility to uphold the standards of the college.
- Students are not expected to roam around in the campus after 5 pm. If any student needs to stayback in the campus after 5 pm, he/she must obtain permission from the principal for the same.
Attendence and Leave of Absence
- Attendance will be marked at the beginning of each period. Students should be present in the classroom before the first bell and late comers will not be given attendence for that session. If a student is late by more than 15 minutes, parents should inform the class teacher.
- Students should occupy their respective seats before attendance is taken. They should not leave the classroom nor should late-comers enter without the permission of the teacher in charge of the class.
- Disciplinary action, will be taken against those who repeatedly absent themselves on insufficient grounds.
- Application for leave for a period may be made to and granted by the teacher in charge of that period.
- A student coming to the class late without leave letter shall lose half a day’s attendance unless recommended by the teacher in charge of that class.
- All serious cases of illness should be reported to the class teacher through the guardian or the warden. In any case of absence on account of illness, medical certificate may be called for.
- Students are not permitted to absent themselves without leave application for the whole or part of a day.
- Absence without leave for part of a day will entail forfeiture of attendance for the whole day. Parents will be informed about the absence of the students on a daily basis via SMS. In case of change of the mobile numbers, parents are expected to inform the college regarding the same.
- A student absenting himself / herself for a period exceeding three working days, whether with or without leave, should on his/her return to the college, report to the Principal.
- A student absent from the college for more than 10 consecutive working days without satisfactory explanation is liable to have his / her name removed from the rolls. A student seeking admission after such a removal should pay the prescribed re-admission fee as the college decides from time to time.
- The minimum attendance (75% of total working days of the semester) is absolutely necessary for promotion and for admission to the University Examination.
- At the end of each semester or at the beginning of the following semester the student should confirm his / her sufficiency of attendance.
- Students whose attendance falls below the minimum shall have to apply for exemption through the Principal to the University. The reason for each day’s absence will have to be explained and in the case of absence due to illness a medical certificate also will have to be submitted especially if one is absent for more than three working days at a stretch.
- A student who absents himself / herself from a test paper, composition, exercise or any other assignments shall not attend the class again until he / she writes the paper or exercise again and submits it to the teacher concerned. Failure to do this shall involve loss of attendance and other punishments.
- All working days shall be counted as whole days irrespective of the number of working hours.
Assignments & Projects
For the academic excellence of the students we are introducing a monthly project program in which all students have to do one given assignment for each paper of that semester ie; 1 project x 5 papers = 5 projects every month. The grades will be announced by 20th of the succeeding month and those grades will be calculated for internal assessment also. Those who fail to submit the projects in time will not be allowed to attend the classes.
Laptop & Camera
All BA & MA students are expected to have laptops from the very beginning of the course itself. Students of BA Multimedia, BA Visual Communication, MA Multimedia & MA Cinema and Television are supposed to have cameras from the beginning of their course.
Use of internet
We highly recommend judicious use of internet by the students. Students are not supposed to spend a lot of time on the internet, Parents should restrict the internet usage and make sure that students use it only for research / academic purposes.
Use of Mobile Phone in the Campus is Prohibited
As per the court verdict and the instructions issued by the Kerala Government and Mahatma Gandhi University, students should not bring mobile phones into the College Campus. Using Mobile Phones inside the Campus (not only in the class room) is a serious offence and will be treated with strict disciplinary actions. If anyone found doing so, the phone will be seized and will be returned only after the parent meets the class teacher.
Political Activities
Political activities are not permitted in the College. Unauthorized meetings, propaganda, processions or fundraising are forbidden.
Notice Board
- Important notices pertaining to the class schedule, attendance, assignment submission dates, examination dates, projects, guest lectures, seminars, etc will be displayed on the notice board from time to time.
- Make it a habit to read, understand and follow the instructions and directions given in the notices.
- No excuse of not having read the notice will be accepted.
- Students do not have the right to exhibit anything on the notice board expect with the permission of the Principal
Admission Norms and Collection of Fees
- College fees will be collected at the beginning of each semester. Latepayments will be accepted with fine within 10 days from due date. If the fees and fine are not paid within the stipulated time of that semester, the name of the student will be removed from the rolls of the college with effect from the date following the expiry of this period.
If the student is readmitted, he/ she will get the benefit of attendance only from the date of re-admission. A re-admission fee will be imposed on those who fail to remit the fee on time.
- Fee once remitted will not be refunded.
- The caution deposit will be refunded only after the completion of the course after the deductions if any, even if the student discontinues the course.
Identity Cards
All the students will be provided with identity cards. Students are expected to wear the identity cards while in the campus and during field trips. They should produce the identity card on demand for inspection by any member of the staff. Students without ID cards will not be permitted to sit in the class. If the card is lost, a duplicate card can be obtained on payment of Rs. 100/-
College Uniform
The College uniform is compulsory for all students, Students are expected to wear the uniform during field trips, examinations and other special occasions as instructed by the Principal. Students without uniforms will not be permitted to sit in the class.
Boys
- Shirt should be properly tucked inside the trousers
- They are expected to have a formal haircut at all times.
- Wearing of neatly polished formal black shoe with black socks is preferred.
Girls
- They should have their hair neatly done. A neatly tied pony tail for short hair and well plaitted hair for long hair is advisable.
- Wearing of neatly polished formal shoes is preferrred.
- Girls and boys are not allowed to wear precious ornaments.
University Examinations
- All students are expected to be seated in the examination hall half an hour prior to the commencement of the exam.
- Students who are more than 30 minutes late will not be allowed to attend the examination.
- All students should come for the examination in full college uniform and with ID card.
- Students will not be allowed to enter the examination hall without their hall-ticket.In case of loss of hall - ticket, the student should obtain a duplicate hall ticket from the college office paying a fine of Rs. 100 /-
Procedure for Getting Letters or certificates from the college office
- If a student needs any letter from the college, the student has to
- contact the college reception
- Get a request form
- Fill in the request form and submit it at the college reception
- The letter will be issued within 48 hours from the college reception
Library Rules
- Silence must be strictly observed in and around the library.
- Students are expected to co-operate with the library staff.
- Do not bring bags or personal books into the library.
- Each student is given one borrower’s card from the library. One book at a time can be When the book is returned to the library, the card will be given back. Each postgraduate student can get two books at a time.
- Students are expected to take care not to lose the card issued to them. A student to whom a card is issued will be responsible for all the books borrowed against that card by anybody.
- Whenever a student has to get a no dues chit or a clearance certificate from the library he/she must return to the library the card lent to him/her.
- Students must, on receiving the books, examine them and report to the library staff any damage found therein. If they fail to do so, they will be held responsible for any damage detected afterwards.
- A book borrowed should be returned on or before the date last marked on its date table. An overdue charge of Rs. 5/- will be levied for each day after the due date.
- Do not make any marking or underlining in the books and periodicals belonging to the library or disfigure them in any other way.
- If a book is damaged or lost from a student, he / she shall pay the cost for replacing the book. If one of a set of books is damaged or lost by a member, he / she must replace it with a copy of the same edition. If it is not available he / she shall replace the whole set.
- Students are not allowed to sub-lend or exchange the cards or books issued to them.
- The librarian can refuse to issue the same books to the same borrower repeatedly if it is necessary to prevent the monopolization of a book required by many.
- The librarian can recall from a borrower the book at any time.
Conduct Regarding Dress and Ragging
The way a student of SJCC dresses should reflect the stature and the culture of St. Joseph College of Communication.
Students are not permitted to wear visible body adornments, and display body piercing or tattoos. Wearing heavy ornaments / jewellery on campus is discouraged. Make up should be sober and unobtrusive.
Translucent and revealing dresses are forbidden. Dress should be comfortable and sufficiently loose. On the days in which uniforms are not compulsory female students should wear tops with sleeves with minimum of 4" length and the top should be at least 7" below the waist.
Male students must be well groomed, i.e., not to wear long hair, and can either be bearded, moustached or clean-shaven. They are also not permitted to wear earrings or studs.
Students not adhering to the above will not be allowed to attend classes & will forfeit the attendance for the classes missed. For repeated violations after 3 warnings, students will be suspended from attending classes for 3 days and the parents will be informed.
Ragging is totally prohibited in the institution and anyone found guilty of ragging and/or abetting ragging whether actively or passively or being a part of conspiracy to promote ragging is liable to be punished in accordance with the UGC regulations 2009.
