Green Initiatives

About Green Initiatives

Green Initiatives at SJCC

At St. Joseph College of Communication, we are committed to creating a sustainable future for our students, faculty, and community. Our green initiatives aim to reduce our environmental footprint, promote eco-friendly practices, and foster a culture of sustainability.

100 KW On-grid Solar Power Plant

Our 100 KW solar power plant generates 60% of the college's power requirements, reducing our reliance on non-renewable energy sources and lowering our carbon emissions.

Solid Waste Management System

  • Vermicomposting: Food waste is converted into organic manure through vermicomposting, reducing waste and promoting sustainable agriculture.
  • Biogas Plant: Food waste from the kitchen is fed into a biogas plant, producing fuel for cooking and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Incinerator: Non-degradable waste is safely incinerated in a scientifically designed incinerator, reducing waste volume and minimizing environmental impact.

Rain Water Harvesting

We have two rainwater reservoirs that collect and utilize rainwater for gardening and toilet flushing, reducing our water consumption and reliance on municipal water supply.

Green & Clean Campus

Our campus is committed to environmental sustainability, featuring green spaces, solar-powered lighting, and energy-efficient systems. We prioritize cleanliness by segregating waste—paper, plastic, and bio-waste—into designated bins to promote reduce, reuse, and recycle practices.

Organic Farming & Aquaculture

We support sustainable aquaculture and protect aquatic ecosystems through our bioflock fish ponds while enhancing our understanding of terrestrial ecosystems with our Small Animal Habitat and Ecological Gardens.

Environmental Promotion Activities

  • Sustainability Education: We incorporate sustainability into our curriculum and host workshops, guest lectures, and community radio broadcasts to raise awareness.
  • Sustainable Campus Practices: Our solar-powered campus features recycling initiatives and energy-efficient systems to reduce our carbon footprint.

Sustainable Development Goals at SJCC

SJCC is dedicated to the UN's 2030 Agenda, focusing on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to empower students as global citizens. We integrate the SDGs into our curriculum and enhance sustainability through workshops and community radio. Our campus fosters a supportive environment with equal opportunities for all students.

  • Sustainable Practices: We utilize solar power, recycling systems, and energy-efficient technologies.
  • Zero Hunger Initiative: Providing nutritious meals at an affordable cost.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Promoting sustainable aquaculture through bioflock fish ponds and enhancing biodiversity in our Small Animal Habitat and Ecological Gardens.

Quality Audits

We regularly conduct green audits, environment audits, and energy audits to ensure that our environmental initiatives are effective and sustainable.

Environmental Extension Activities with Radio

We engage in various environmental extension activities with radio, including:

  • Cheeranchira Organic Village Project: Encourages sustainable living by promoting eco-friendly farming practices and reducing waste. We partner with agricultural and forest departments to distribute saplings, fostering a greener community. Additionally, we introduce the innovative Ring Compost technique to local households, facilitating the conversion of bio-waste into organic fertilizer and further supporting environmentally friendly agriculture.
  • Seminar on Biodiversity Conservation: Brings together experts from various fields to share knowledge and expertise on preserving and protecting the biodiversity of Kuttanad.
  • Preservation of Local Waterbodies: Collaborates with social workers and environmental activists to preserve the waterbodies in Changanacherry, specifically focusing on reducing waste accumulation and ensuring the free flow of water in the local waterbody, 'Umbidichira-Avanithodu'.
  • Painting Competition: Promotes environmental protection and sustainability among young minds through student competitions in local schools.
