Department of Media Studies

The Department of Media Studies offers programmes focusing on filmmaking, journalism, advertising, sound design, and visual editing. The programmes cover areas such as photography, scriptwriting, direction, acting, cinematography, editing, journalism, advertising filmmaking, documentary making, lighting, radio programme production, TV journalism, creative writing for new media, visual enhancement techniques, storytelling, music video production, media ethics, sound recording and mixing, and media management. Alongside discipline-specific courses, the department provides multi-disciplinary, skill enhancement, and value addition courses, most of which are practical or project-based. These courses prepare students to meet industry demands upon graduation, supplemented by foundational theoretical knowledge.

The department organizes workshops conducted by faculty from leading national institutes due to its direct collaboration with the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, and the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata. Notably, the founding principal of SJCC, Prof. John Sankaramangalam, formerly served as the director of FTII, Pune. The department takes pride in its professional and experienced faculty, many of whom are active members of university-level boards of studies and syllabus-designing committees. Some faculty members remain engaged in the filmmaking industry, garnering international awards and recognition for their creative work.

An alumnus from our department can be spotted in the backdrop of nearly every film released in Kerala.
